Fifth Season

2009 silk painting Fifth Season 90×90 cm

The silk painting Fifth Season (that is, carnival season), also created in 2009, shows you a self-contained, dreamlike and romantic world (actually enviable: when it comes to carnival, many people think of beer, drunk teenagers, bad jokes and above all bad music…)

In this cosmos of colour, the lines and surfaces form recognisable shapes in some places. Isolated, realistic details keep appearing, such as the eye as a fragment of the body, or a piano, grass and a tree as fragments of space. They are scattered across the surface, which gains a certain spatial depth only through overlaps. This creates unreal images that nevertheless strengthen the message, such as the smile of the man at the back:
The mouth is quite ordinary, but the additional patch of colour, impossible in reality, gives the smile more expressive power.
The same ornaments, which probably appear rather unconsciously while painting, recur again and again. The ornament is not just decoration but much more: it is one of the most original forms of artistic expression.
The sprinkles of paint (applied with a toothbrush) have a unifying effect by softening the hard impression of the precisely separated colour fields set against each other.
